“Swan Lake”

Charles' painting, "Swan Lake" is in the Permanent Collection of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and is currently being exhibited in the Museum’s newest permanent collection exhibition Beyond Measure: The Art of Scale.

Charles on the story of “Swan Lake”

“The painting depicts a scene from the ballet Swan Lake. The princess has been turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer. During the day, she can take on human form, but at night she must return to her swan body. The only way to break the spell is for a prince to vow his undying love to her. In this scene, the princess has just turned back into a swan after meeting the prince at a party in the town.

The sorcerer has tricked the prince into believing that his own daughter is the real princess. The princess is heartbroken, knowing that she can never be with the prince unless he can see through the sorcerer’s deception.”
